As of today, Syrian war refugees have been in Syntagma square for 14 days; putting their life in danger with their hunger strike, in order to claim what should go without saying: the application of the relevant clauses of the Geneva convention, signed by the Greek state, that is of their rights for shelter, food and water, and recognition of the status of political refugees in Greece and in all countries of the EU.
In their combat for dignity, justice and life, for themselves and the tenths of children and babies they have managed to evacuate from the Syrian war horrors, all Greeks and immigrants who have experienced the consequences of poverty, war and oppression are on their side, understanding that solidarity is a prerequisite if we want to be over and done with the politics that generate human misery.
Against them, yet again, stands an already well-known crowd of apologists of (domestic or international) barbarism in the name of « law and order » that threatens to gradually transform society into a concentration camp. During the last couple of days, a series of official declarations were added to a shameful text distributed to the refugees by the Greek Ministry of Interior, urging them to leave Greece and seek their fortune as illegal immigrants in other EU Countries.
Thus, first of all, came the good old government clown Adonis Georgiadis, calling the police to evacuate Syntagma square because Christmas is approaching and people need to go shopping. Then, the Propagandastaffel of the Police HQ discovered an issue of public health, obviously addressing exclusively those who have not seen with their own eyes the exemplary organization of the strike. Today finally, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior Mr. Syrigos claimed that Syrian refugees are instigated and manipulated by those who had organized an immigrants’ hunger strike in Athens back in 2011.
One has to be more socially obtuse than Marie Antoinette in order to believe that people who escaped the fires of a civil war in their own country and seek food and shelter need to be instigated or patronized by anybody. The real instigators of the Syriann refugees’ actions are the Greek state, which applies murderous policies on and within its frontiers, and the EU which condemns these people to a long-lasting captivity and impedes their free movement, promoting state violence and fascist violence against immigrants in Greece.
As for us, who stand on their side, among us there are indeed some of the people involved in the immigrants’ hunger strike in 2011. But there are also the ones who, over the last four years, have experienced the hypocricy of the Greek goverrnments’ attitude against the refugees, the politics of violence, poverty, social automatism and humiliation.
– We demand immediate satisfaction of the Syrian refugees’ claims for food, shelter and free movement.
– We alert the Greek sociey to be ready to prevent any act of oppression against the hunger strikers.
– We call everyone to support the refugees with clothes, milk, medicine, and their presence in order to defend the hunger strike.
International solidarity is the peoples’ weapon against racism and barbarism.
GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR SOLIDARITY TO THE SYRIAN REFUGEES
